There are several things to consider when seeking treatment for a job injury. First you should select a clinic that routinely accepts workers’ compensation patients. Texas workers’ comp can be frustrating under the best of circumstances so having a doctor who understands the rules will allow for a smoother treatment process.

The second thing to look at regarding treatment is the perspective and goals of the clinic. In other words, is this a “company doctor” that was selected by the company for you to see initially or did you choose your doctor? You always want to cooperate with the policies of a job injury as it relates to suggested or mandatory initial evaluation, however, ultimately you want to select a doctor that has your health and safety as the top priority and not that of a large referral company (or your company) that referred you there. Unfortunately, with insurance companies becoming more aggressive in Texas regarding cost containment, having the freedom to choose your doctor is becoming limited in some large companies that have chosen to subscribe to a relatively small “network” of doctors that is on the plan.

The next thing to research is having a clinic that is multi-disciplined and equipped to handle your needs and your treatment in a timely and efficient manner. Some questions to ask for example would include the following: Does the doctor normally treat your type of injury? Are there different types of doctors and therapists on staff to treat you on an on-going basis if needed or does therapy have to be referred out? Are the hours and location of the facility compatible with your schedule and ability to maintain on-going appointments? Is transportation provided? Etc.

Be patient and understand that while most work injuries will heal with time, they may not heal correctly or you may not be as capable of performing your job requirements without supervised on- going therapy. This can take anywhere from a month to more than a year based on the nature and complexity of the injury and treatment needed. Even following treatment, there is chance that the job you got hurt performing is either no longer available or not medically recommended to be continued.

Lastly, realize that all injured workers can choose their own doctor (with network exceptions) but you can only change once unless extenuating circumstances exists, so choose wisely and make sure the healthcare team that you select will effectively and efficiently meet your treatment goals..
